What’s the difference between a dentist, a dental therapist, a dental hygienist and an oral health therapist?
In Australia, a dental therapist is a registered oral health professional who mainly provides dental care and education for children and adolescents. Their training includes oral health assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative procedures (such as fillings), tooth extractions and preventive services like fluoride applications and oral health education. While their focus is mainly on younger patients, some dental therapists may treat adults, depending on their qualifications and the regulations in their state or territory.
A dental hygienist is a registered professional that focuses on the prevention and management of gum disease through procedures like scale and cleans, fissure sealants and oral health education. They also support dentists and orthodontists in the delivery of dental care to the full patient base.
An oral health therapist holds dual registered qualifications in both dental therapy and dental hygiene, allowing them to provide a broader range of services. This includes all the functions of a dental therapist, as well as periodontal treatments and preventive care for patients of all ages.
A dentist is a registered health practitioner who assesses, prevents, diagnoses, advises on and treats injuries, diseases, deficiencies, deformities or lesions on or of the human teeth, mouth, jaws or associated structures. Dentists can perform surgical procedures, prescribe medications and manage complex dental issues across all age groups. While all roles are vital to the dental team, they do differ in training, scope and the complexity of care they provide.
